Submitting to the VIRGINIA Journal

Do you have a thought-provoking essay about a contemporary foreign affairs topic? Would you like to join the ranks of distinguished Virginia Journal of International Affairs authors?

Submit to the journal at VaJournal.editor-in-chief@iroatuva.org! The Virginia Journal of International Affairs is published every semester. Guidelines for submission can be found below. Submissions for our Spring 2024 Edition are now open and will close February 6th, 2024 at 11:59pm.

Only University of Virginia undergraduates or newly-minted graduates are eligible to submit.

  • Topic: A contemporary issue related to foreign affairs

  • Length: Between 10 and 20 pages

  • Essay grade: B+ or higher

  • Additional information: Include a title page, abstract, and brief author bio (150 words max.)

  • Format: Send your essay as a Word document with Chicago, parenthetical, inline citations


Becoming a Staff Writer

Interested in writing shorter pieces for the Journal? We encourage you to apply to become a staff writer! Staff writers are responsible for contributing to the shorter form and opinion sections of the Journal through both writing and revision. Staff writers will have the opportunity to write 2-3 (or more!) op-eds over the semester to be published on our website. You can apply through this form. Applications will close on February 2nd, 2024 at 11:59PM.

BECOMING A STAFF EDITOR

Interested in becoming involved with the Journal? We welcome you to apply to become a staff editor! Staff editors are responsible for editing undergraduate research papers that are accepted for publication by the Journal and will also have the opportunity to write 1-2 (or more!) op-eds over the semester that will be published on our website.

Staff editor applications are accepted in the Fall semester.
